Selgase mix, honed floor tiles

Dolomite Selgase

Selgase dolomite comes from a quarry located in the western part of Saaremaa island, near the village of Selgase. This fine-grained dolomite has a characteristic pattern in yellow or blue. Selgase dolomite formed more than 400 million years ago. This stone was first used in construction a couple of hundred years ago when it was used for several buildings in the western part of Saaremaa (for example the main building of Pidula manor) and in Kuressaare and Tallinn. Nowadays the Selgase dolomite has been used for façades also in Scandinavia and Russia.

This very decorative natural stone with an intense pattern is easy to process. In the past Selgase dolomite was only used for constructing walls. However, nowadays also floor tiles, cornice stones, windowsills, and other products are produced from Selgase natural stone. This dolomite with an unmistakable pattern is suitable for producing interior design elements (for example fireplaces). It has also been used a lot in the interior and exterior finishing of residential houses.

Selgase dolomite is one of the two best known natural stones quarried on Saaremaa island – the other one being Kaarma dolomite.
