But should you prefer smaller tiles or bigger tiles? Broadly speaking, it can be said that as a rule very big tiles are not used in smaller rooms as this causes too much wastage. However, this is also an aspect where the buyer’s preferences are important. It is also possible to use floor tiles with falling lengths or make patterns using tiles of different sizes (for example the Opus Romano pattern). We will describe these options below.
Floor tiles with falling lengths
Every stone we sell in our online shop is also available as floor tiles with falling lengths. This means that two of the ordered tile’s measurements are fixed (width and thickness) but the length of the tiles differs. Besides giving an irregular look, this helps to save on material.
In the interest of achieving a beautiful result it is important to observe that when laying out the tiles with falling lengths, the joints don’t match (the distance between transverse joints could ideally be a minimum of 100 mm). This is shown on the adjacent image.
Opus Romano pattern
This is a classical pattern for laying out floor tiles and it uses tiles of different sizes. The pattern repeats itself and it gives the floor an antique and rustic look.
