Limestone Reval – an Estonian classic

In Estonia, it is difficult to overestimate the importance of limestone and this is the reason why limestone was named the national stone of Estonia in 1992. The local inhabitants have used limestone since ancient times and one of the most famous examples of this usage is the old town of Tallinn which has been added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

The stone with many names: Tallinn, Lasnamäe, Reval

Reval Stone sells this stone which is quarried in Tallinn under the name Reval. However, the same limestone is also called Tallinn limestone and Lasnamäe limestone (referring to the administrative district of Tallinn where the quarry is located).

Our natural stones have also gained popularity abroad. In addition to Estonia, the limestone Reval is also very popular in Scandinavia. There the names Lindholmen and Estlandia Kalksten are used for this same stone.

The history of limestone Reval

This limestone from Tallinn can be up to 500 million years old. The local inhabitants started to use this stone thousands of years ago, using it for graves made of stone. Later it was also used for buildings and you can find buildings made of limestone all over the northern part of Estonia.

One of the most prominent works made of the limestone quarried from Lasnamäe (what we call limestone Reval) is the fortifications of Tallinn originating from the 13th century. In the following century, its usage became even wider and limestone was used to build the houses in Tallinn’s old town and to pave the city’s streets.

From building to jewelry

The main ranges of use of limestone throughout history have been the building industry (especially exterior finishing) and art, including sculptures. Today limestone Reval is more and more used in interior decoration and in many other fields – including jewelry.
